I feel like I am cheating the state of Alabama and the city of Mobile, Alabama every time I buy my groceries and only have to pay nine cents sales tax on every dollar. Sure, I realize our sales tax is even higher than the city of New York, but it's just not enough. ( New York city's combined sales tax rate is 8.8%, Mobile's is 9%.)The Alabama state sales tax is 4% and the city of Mobile adds a local sales tax rate of 5% to that, but it's just not enough. I think the city of Mobile needs to raise the local sales tax rate to 7%, so we would only be paying a combined sales tax of 11% on every American dollar we spend in this city. I really like the idea of city and state sales tax on food you buy unprepared in a grocery store. It doesn't matter that many U. S. states do not tax on unprepared food ietms such as groceries, which many people agree you have to have to live day-to-day in this world. The city of Mobile needs to tax more on groceries, and to even double the tax because it might help get local pay-as-you sleep road projects completed before the next century. Florida Street comes to mind.
