0525-Tropical Depression Beryl Could Form in Atlantic Ocean

If tropical depression Beryl forms in the Atlantic this weekend it will be only the second time two storms have formed in the Atlantic before the official start of hurricane season, June 1. Alberto formed earlier in the month. The very large low pressure system in the Atlantic has a 70% chance of becoming a depression within 48 hours. Yesterday morning it stood a 0% chance of forming. Wind shear that was slowing the system is expected to subside this weekend, opening the door for formation.…

0524-Hurricane Bud slowly moves towards Mexico as a low pressure system in Atlantic aims to become Beryl

Weather is making significant history this year as it appears the U.S. has fast-forwarded the seasons and months and events that should happen in June and July are happening in May. Forecasters believe hurricane Bud will continue to grow stronger as it approaches the Mexican coast near Acapulco, and perhaps stall for some time as a category 3 storm. Flooding will be a major concern along with strong winds for the coast and inland. In the Atlantic near the Gulf of Mexico a large low pressure…

0520-Cage the Elephant refuse to be caged at Gulf Shores, AL 2012 Hangout Festival

Talk about wild means you consider up and coming blasting off,  Cage the Elephant. When the singer dove off the Letting Go stage today at Gulf Shores Hangout Music Festival I thought a few things: he's definitely letting go and he's not being confined by anyone or thing. There, I thought is a band shooting for the win. I caught the three allowed songs from the pit area but not before the singer defied everyone and thing…

0519-Mavis Staples Takes You There at the Gulf Shores Hangout Music Festival

Saying she would never, ever get on the back of the bus Mavis Staples roused the crowd at the Chevrolet stage on the sunny beach of Gulf Shores, Alabama this afternoon. Besides singing in top form Staples showed that she was not shy speaking politics and asked what was the matter with people questioning the birthplace of our president. I was able to catch a few songs of her set and really enjoyed hearing the old Staple Singers classic "I'll Take You There." As I was leaving the stage area…

0535-Gulf Shores redefines the term Hangout with a stellar Hangout Festival :Day 3

The drive from Mobile has each day been pleasant, a chance to enjoy the farmland scenery and take in the fresh air in these parts. Of course I drove the speed limit, which changed from 30 to 70 depending on where I was. Despite dire warnings from local media outlets regarding police and state trooper presence I hardly saw either.…

0518-It's about Time we confronted breast feeding again

America is a wonderful but strange country, still young by world standards and still a little on the uppity side. Like it or not Americans like to tell other people how to live their lives. In Europe, on a personal level we would be laughed off the street, yet here it is oddly acceptable to butt in, to push your view on others. The recent cover of Time magazine showing a 3 year old boy breast-feeding on his mother is a wonderful example of yes you can, no you can't. The woman in the photo…

0517-Rand Paul couldn't get any straighter

If Rand Paul, a republican senator from Kentucky was correct in his stance rejecting gay marriage rights and sticking with "six thousand years" of tradition, we would all still be living in caves saying I Tarzan, you Jane. Sorry Rand but as much as you and your small group of followers would like for everything to stay Wizard of Oz and Ozzie and Harriet, life changes and with change often comes equality and good.…

0516-Two Groups of Gay Marriage Opponents: Financial and Religious

There are two major groups of opponents to gay marriage in the United States, with smaller groups who oppose for various reasons such as prejudice or non-understanding of the issue. The largest group of opponents are those who wish to deny gays the same financial benefits straight couples receive across the board in daily and annual finances. It's no secret that the IRS shows favor to married couples and those with children, providing them generous exemptions. Single people - including…

0513-Greece on the brink of collapse?

When governments stop spending money some people get mad. In Greece they go wild. At this moment there is no organized government in Greece and talks between political parties cannot actually be called talks but rather bickering. The New Democracy party - the most conservative of those vying for power failed to achieve enough votes in last weeks election to take control of Parliament. The far left have gained considerable power, supported by a country rebelling against so-called austerity…

0514-Mobile,Alabama Mayor Sam Jones under fire for campaign spending in non-election year

It all started with a few questions by Mobile's alternative newspaper Lagniappe. Co-editor Rob Holbert asked the Mayor a few questions about campaign spending at a city council meeting after the Mayor refused requests for an interview. To use a Deep South cliche, he got cussed out.(Disclaimer, the publisher of Mobile Tribune a few years ago worked as a reporter for Lagniappe, covering the The Mobile County Commission meetings.) Following Lagniappe's lead, the Mobile Press Register and local…

0506-Gulf Shores Hangout Festival Promises Better Shuttle Service This Year

As the countdown to the Gulf Shores, Alabama Hangout Music Festival is on, organizers promise better shuttle access to and from the venue. Apparently last year the demand for shuttles exceeded the number of shuttles available. Parking close to the music setting is going to be difficult, and getting out of the area might prove to be a challenge as well. The solution being offered is more shuttles and more frequently. At this time we are not sure of the shuttle schedule but hopefully it will…
