Although he has not used the exact phase, it is becoming clear that U.S. Presidential candidate Rick Santorum has plans to replace the U.S. Constitution with the Bible, and that the federal law of the land will be drawn directly from the Bible. It's a chilling prospect considering this Republican contender for the highest office in the land, is gaining on "front-runner" Mitt Romney in recent popular polls by organizations such as Reuters and Gallop.
I have a profound respect for Christianity, as I do for many religions around the world. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just live and worship under one God? While that's not going to happen, it's frightening to think the leader of a world power could isolate much of the rest of the world, leading his country from a pulpit instead of a political perspective. What is extremely interesting this early in the race is the differences between Mitt Romney - who only last month was leading the Republican contenders - and Rick Santorum, who didn't seem to have a chance because of his extremist views.
It's Santorum's extremist views that is gaining him the lead in the United States, and Mitt Romney's slightly weak platform that's hurting him. In other words it might not matter a whole lot exactly what you say but only that you say it loud and clear and with utter conviction. It's true like we already knew, controversy sometimes works in your favor. Rick Santorum is playing to a considerably large audience of conservatives who like people of all perspectives are fed up with so much wrong in our troubled country. It's not just the economy, it's the crime and a strange recklessness that permeates so much of the country. You see a certain, unexplained disregard of people for one another and the ultra-conservative will point to lack of Christian beliefs, morals, ethics. America seems to have lost her innocence and taken on a mien of the jaded. Almost nothing surprises us anymore, and most people drive the way they feel, compounding the interaction we have with each other on our highways and roads.
Someone like Rick Santorum knows how to cash in on America's discontent. Then there is the gay marriage thing. The gay experience in America has graduate from being in the closet to living in a glass closet. It's okay to be gay but don't "announce it", don't "brag about it," and don't think you can go so far as get married like the rest of us. Santorum if elected not only promises to put a stop to gay marriages, he intends to try to back-track and undo the marriages that have already been sealed. That's a bold statement and move on the part of this candidate, and you would think it would be taken with a grain of salt or as pure wackiness, but hold on a minute. It's not.
But the real truth about a backlash against gay marriage has little to do with belief or religion, it has to do with something many hold stronger: money. The legalization of gay marriage has opened the door for marriage partners to enjoy the perks offered to their counterparts, such as federal and state income tax breaks, credit scoring and a host of other rewards reaped by the married and not those single.
Just how far Rick Santorum will be able to run on this ticket still remains to be seen. It's too early to know. But, if you are an American with an eye on politics, you should like those who watch tropical depressions in the Atlantic, keep a lookout on Rick Santorum. He could possibly turn into one hell of a political hurricane. -Preston Brady III, MobileTribune.com
